Was the sequel worth the wait?

For a lot of us, Beetlejuice wasn't just a movie, it was one of those weird little childhood experiences that stuck with us forever.

As a kid, parts of it genuinely creeped me out. The claymation, the sandworms, the strange afterlife visuals... It had that perfect kind of gross, unsettling energy that somehow felt right for growing up in the late 80s and 90s. This was the era of creepy crawlers, garbage pail kids, gross out toys, weird disturbing cartoons and movies.

And honestly? I absolutely loved it.

Of course, Lydia and Beetlejuice are iconic, but Delia always stood out to me... Catherine O'Hara was perfection. “If you don't let me gut out this house and make it my own, I will go insane... and I will take you with me!” Absolute legend.

So, of course I was going to see the sequel.

And seeing some of those characters again was genuinely fun. Delia still had the same chaotic energy, and some moments absolutely landed for me just on the nostalgia alone.

But if I'm being fair? I do think the sequel suffered from trying to do too much.

The original had a pretty straightforward setup. The Maitland's die, they're stuck in their house, chaos unfolds. Simple, weird, effective.

The sequel felt much busier, with multiple storylines competing for attention instead of one strong central thread. The acting was really good, but some parts worked and some didn't. I found myself wishing there were more nods to the original magic. More of those iconic moments. More of that weirdness with purpose.

That said... nostalgia is powerful.

Even when a sequel doesn't fully hit, I'll probably still show up every time for the worlds I loved growing up.

Same thing with Hocus Pocus, 2. Did I love it? Some parts of it, and the actors of course. Did I still enjoy revisiting that universe? Absolutely. That's kind of the magic, isn't it? Sometimes these follow-ups aren't really about topping the original. Sometimes they're just about reconnecting with a version of ourselves that loved these stories the first time around. And production companies love to bank on that.

So now I'm curious:

What sequel or reboot pulled you in purely because of nostalgia… even if it didn't fully deliver?
